What Are The Different Types Of Cymbals And Their Uses?
Hi-Hats: These come in pairs and are mounted on top of each other on a foot controllable stand. They are played using a stick, the sound can be adjusted by putting pressure on the pedal to open and close the hi-hats. They are one of the core instruments used in drumming and make up a large part of the drummers time-keeping sound. Available sizes 10"-15". 14" is the standard size.

Ride Cymbal:
This is usually the largest and heaviest cymbal in a drummers set-up. It also plays a large part in the drummers time-keeping sound. Available sizes 18"-24" but 20" is the standard size.

Crash Cymbal: These range in size from 13"-20" and are used to accent beats. They can also be used in the time-keeping sound. Average size is 16".

Splash Cymbal: These are as they sound! A very short, sharp splash sound. They are also used for accents and vary in size between 6"-12". Average size is 10".

China/Chinese Cymbal:
These sound very trashy. They have a upturned edge and are usually played upside down. Sizes vary from 12"-20". Average size is 16"/18"

Crash Ride Cymbal:
These are normally 18" cymbals and can be used as both a crash and a ride.

Why Don't Cymbals Come With All Drum Kits?
Cymbals only come with starter kits because when the player gets more accustomed to the sounds of cymbals they will want better quality cymbals. There is such a wide choice of cymbals it would be almost impossible to meet the need of every player by just putting one set of cymbals with every kit. Players like to be able to choose their own cymbal setup so they have what is right for them.

Whats The Difference Between Rock and Standard Cymbals?
Rock cymbals are thicker and louder than regular cymbals and therefore suited for heavier players.

Can Cymbals Crack And What Happens If They Do?
If played incorrectly and at the wrong angle cymbals can crack. If the cymbal cracks from the outside edge in or from the bell in, the cymbal has been played incorrectly and nothing can be done. (Sometimes people drill a small hole at the end of the crack to prevent it from spreading. This does work but only for a short time.) The other way a cymbal will crack is along the lathing marks. If it cracks this way it is a manufacturing fault and so long as it is still under guarantee can be replaced.

What Way Should A China/Chinese Cymbal Be Played?
China/chinese cymbals should be played upside down i.e. with the bell facing down. This prevents the cymbal from being cracked on its edge.
